“Rookie Red Team” - A Cybersecurity Party Game Project

Blindflug Studios are proud to announce a collaboration with Oneconsult AG, a cybersecurity company dedicated to identifying security deficiencies. Oneconsult AG were attending a conference and required a short, eye-catching game to entertain their guests who visited their booth. Blindflug Studios took on this exciting challenge and provided a fun tablet game for the oncoming visitors to play with!

In the game, you join the team called the Rookie Red Team which is made up of four red pandas. Their cute appearance makes for an approachable nature, drawing attention to passing visitors during the conference.

The Rookie Red Team is hired to breach an organization by solving humorous cybersecurity and IT tasks in order to navigate their way through security and find their way into the office skyscraper. As a proof of the team’s success, they will steal the CEO’s bamboo plant!

Once the players are ready, they will be assigned to a red panda to fulfil their tasks. After a brief introduction in the tutorial, the players will be on their way to the first mission. Each player will be presented with their own interface which varies between players. A text prompt simultaneously tells each player what task they need to complete within a certain time limit. But the twist is that the players will not always be able to solve the tasks with their own interface. Their prompt can often only be solved with the help of another player who has the according interaction tied to the prompt.

In other words, the backbone of the game lies in teamwork. This fun party game aims to gather a group of people to work together in order to beat the game. The bottom line is that the game cannot be beaten unless the team works together through proper communication. With their tablets in their hands, each player would have to verbally communicate their prompts to other players and efficiently coordinate their communication in order to reduce the risk of cross-talk.

As the game is meant to be of a fun nature, the prompts are accordingly humorous, with tasks like “flirt with the janitor” or “date the CEO’s daughter”.

If the players succeed in solving their tasks within the time limit, they will advance to the next level.

Oneconsult set up their booth at the it-sa — Home of IT Security event in Nurnberg where passers-by were able to educate themselves on cyber resilience and enjoy a round of Rookie Red Team while even winning a prize!

The game was a huge success among the players as they gave positive feedback on the game calling it “fun” and “innovative” and even acquiring if the game was available on the App Store.

Tobias Ellenberger, CEO of Oneconsult AG said about the game:

The cooperation with Blindflug was exemplary at all times. Our needs were understood from the beginning and met with sensible suggestions. The desired result to develop a "cool, cooperative game with fun factor on the topic of red-teaming" was always in focus and was achieved. Professional, efficient and goal-oriented! That's how it should be.
